Rey Mysterio (born Oscar Gutierrez) has wrestled all over the world. He has three world championships as well as numerous other accolades to his name. Despite all of these successes with the WWE and other wrestling organizations, the master of the 619 has found a new home in the 323. Mysterio returned to the Temple of Lucha Underground this past week and brought quite the following with him.
This past week’s Lucha Underground episode scored over 160,000 viewers, an increase of nearly 63%, as reported by ShowBuzzDaily. This is a huge increase and one well deserved for the budding promotion. Lucha Underground has wisely done everything in its power to be different from the competition. Even though they have employed former talent from World Wrestling Entertainment, World Championship Wrestling and numerous other promotions, their presentation, performers and cinematic flair have successfully made them unique, especially when compared to their competitors.
More healthy competition is always welcome in the 21st Century pro-wrestling business. Any promotion that can generate that much of a spike in interest and make it to the top 150 cable TV shows to boot, has made all of the right moves. Let’s hope that other smaller promotions like Ring of Honor, TNA and Reality of Wrestling can make some moves and get some talent that will not only pique fans’ interest, but fit into the program just as seamlessly as Mysterio has for Lucha Underground.
