NAIL IN THE COFFIN: THE FALL AND RISE OF VAMPIRO MOVIE REVIEW

It’s not every day you meet a luchador from Canada dressed up as a vampire, but Ian Hodgkinson isn’t your everyday professional wrestler. This documentary traces Hodgkinson’s journey from small town Canada to Mexico City where he channeled his love of punk rock and horror movies into the wrestling persona known as Vampiro. His antics in the ring brought him fame and fortune, but also a lifetime of bad deals, physical injuries and an outsized persona that sometimes threatened to overshadow his private life. Along the way, we learn of Hodgkinson’s troubled youth, his adventures on the fringes of Hollywood, and his struggles with addiction and depression. Despite setbacks and debilitating pain, Hodgkinson’s daughter Dasha remains his primary motivation; the person he does it all for. While hewing closely to the rise and fall (and rise again) narrative of conventional sports docs and biopics, “Nail in the Coffin” distinguishes itself through its touching father/daughter dynamic. Our very own A-team of reviewers Adrian, Rae, Marco and Ben go to the mat over this new documentary. Did they crown it a champion, or did they boo it out of the ring? Listen to our review and find out!
