Unhinged Movie Review

UNHINGED MOVIE REVIEW

Rachel (Caren Pistorius) is a recently divorced single mother whose very bad day is about to get exponentially worse. Stuck in traffic, late for work, and trying to drop off her kid at school, Rachel makes the mistake of honking at the wrong motorist. You see, said motorist (Russell Crowe) is… well… “Unhinged”. He pulls up to Rachel’s car, lectures her on car horn etiquette, then demands an apology. When she refuses, he sets out to teach her a brutal lesson.

Crowe is the main attraction here and he’s clearly relishing the opportunity to play a villain who is both larger than life, yet frighteningly believable. His Tom Hooper is a prick for the ages; a slovenly, overweight avatar of societal rage, toxic masculinity and domestic violence. Pistorius holds her own as the harried mother who must stay one step ahead of her pursuer and protect the people she loves from Tom’s violent retribution. “Unhinged” is the first film to be released in theaters during the pandemic (at least according to the film’s marketing team) but is it worth the risk? SPOILER WARNING: NO MOVIE IS THAT GOOD. Despite its questionable release strategy, our road raging reviewers London, Adrian, Davey, and Marco mostly enjoyed this elevated grindhouse flick. Not enough to watch it in a theater with an audience, but enough to recommend you wait for its inevitable release on VOD or streaming.
