Highly Suspect Reviews: Just Mercy

Just Mercy Movie Review

JUST MERCY MOVIE REVIEW

Based on the true story of legal hero Bryan Stevenson who, despite being a top student who graduated from Harvard Law who basically could have pursued anything he wanted, chose to go to Alabama and join a shoe-string outfit to defend unjustly incarcerated men on death row. And being that it was Alabama in the 1980s, there were quite a few, most of them, shocker, African-American. He and his assistant (Brie Larson) take on the case of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx) a man accused of murdering a white woman who himself thinks it’s pointless to even try to buck against the institutional racism there. Thank goodness there are people like Stevenson out there who will not take injustice, no matter how ingrained, sitting down. The question is, does Just Mercy elevate itself beyond this stripe of a legal thriller that we’ve definitely seen before? Chris, Frank, Marco, and Alan open up the case.
