1917 MOVIE REVIEW

War! UH! What is it good for…well, to be fair, a lot of great movies. Sam Mendes gets into the game with this WWI story of two soldiers assigned the unenviable task of crossing enemy lines on foot into uncertain danger to deliver a message to the front in a bit of a time crunch in order to save hundreds of lives. Along the way, they encounter a lot of familiar (to audiences) faces and have a lot of skin-of-their-teeth escapes. But the real seller here is the film’s use of a simulated single-shot for the entirety of its real-time runtime. All but unassailable in its gee-whiz factor, but will the story be more than a collection of tired war-movie tropes? Listen to Chris, Alan, Marco, Frank, and Sarah Jane weigh in.
