Lot #21

Writer-director Nakamura Yoshihiro takes a break from his masterful adaptations of Isaka Kotaro-penned literary works with the offbeat fantasy comedy Chonmage Purin (a.k.a. A Boy and His Samurai). NEWS and Kanjani8 member Nishikido Ryo takes on his first film lead role as a young samurai who travels forward in time to contemporary Tokyo and learns to become a dessert chef. Based on a series of novels by Araki Gen, the story emphasizes more on the samurai’s fish-out-of-water story than the complexities of time travel, making it a whimsical comedy about the clash of very different values and the reversal of traditional gender roles. With its charming, offbeat story, Chonmage Purin managed to break into the top ten box office chart with on its opening weekend, despite being a limited release of just 36 screens.
Single mom Hiroko (Tomosaka Rie) and her young son Tomoya are walking along the street one afternoon when they suddenly encounter Yasubei (Nishikido Ryo), a young samurai from 180 years ago that has somehow traveled to modern Tokyo. Through various circumstances, Hiroko decides to let Yasubei stay with her in exchange for housework and cooking. In the process, Yasubei picks up the art of making western desserts. Through books, television programs, and a lot of trial and error, Yasubei becomes a western dessert chef with plenty of admirers, while Hiroko begins to wonder if Yasubei could possibly become more than just the time traveler that takes care of her home. (from YesAsia.com).

This import DVD is the only version available of this very acclaimed film that played Fantastic Fest in Austin and became the hit of that year. It is a NTSC Region 2 release.

Christopher Nolan made his feature directorial debut with this 16mm black-and-white British suspense drama, shot on weekends with a $6,000 budget. Wannabe writer Bill, aka “The Young Man” (Jeremy Theobald), is “between jobs,” living in impoverished circumstances with no prospects, plots, or outlines. Desperate for ideas, he begins following people in the street to “gather material,” more accurately described as a venture into voyeurism. When Cobb (Alex Haw) realizes he’s being followed, he confronts Bill. Cobb explains that he goes one step further — entering people’s apartments not only for theft but also to spy on private possessions. The notion of illegal intrusions excites Bill, but graduating to the next plateau beyond break-ins sets him up as a fall guy. Shown at the 1998 San Francisco Film Festival.

This Criterion Edition Blu-Ray of the film features lots of special features including an early short film by Christopher Nolan.

Imagine becoming a best-selling novelist, and almost immediately famous and wealthy, while still in college, and before long seeing your insufferable father reduced to a bag of ashes in a safety-deposit box, while after American Psycho your celebrity drowns in a sea of vilification, booze, and drugs. Then imagine having a second chance ten years later, as the Bret Easton Ellis of this remarkable novel is given, with a wife, children, and suburban sobriety—only to watch this new life shatter beyond recognition in a matter of days. At a fateful Halloween party he glimpses a disturbing (fictional) character driving a car identical to his late father’s, his stepdaughter’s doll violently “malfunctions,” and their house undergoes bizarre transformations both within and without. Connecting these aberrations to graver events—a series of grotesque murders that no longer seem random and the epidemic disappearance of boys his son’s age—Ellis struggles to defend his family against this escalating menace even as his wife, their therapists, and the police insist that his apprehensions are rooted instead in substance abuse and egomania. Lunar Park confounds one expectation after another, passing through comedy and mounting horror, both psychological and supernatural, toward an astonishing resolution—about love and loss, fathers and sons—in what is surely the most powerfully original and deeply moving novel of an extraordinary career.

A classic comic adaptation from the acclaimed fantasy author Michael Moorcock! In this story Erekosë assumes the role of “Clen of Clen-Gar,” a noble of the land called the “Dream Marches”, part of a greater land called “Heaven”. He befriends a peaceful race of beings known as “Angels”, who can best be described in one of their forms as flying manatees. In the day-time, they gracefully float through Heaven, absorbing water vapor from the air, and by night they release the stored water as acid rain upon a neighboring land coincidentally called “Hell”, whose savage inhabitants live in poverty compared to the luxury of Heaven and the Dream Marches. The angels can also assume an insectoid form similar to human-sized ant-men. This graphic novel is scripted and drawn by the legendary Howard Chaykin.

Lillith Moon tea towels are hand-printed on flour sack towels. The skull and raven towel was printed for this event. Cori picked the birch tree towels because when we are lost in the forest the shining silver branches of the Birch light the way and give us guidance on our path and chose the fireweed towel because it is the first plant to grow after a fire.

Creepee Baybe has traveled around the world, starting in 2002. The artist is anonymous in Skagway, regularly and secretly putting weird items up for sale. Creepee Baybe is one of the more popular designs, which in this basket is a belt buckle.

Regina and Harold were made by Skagway folk artist Danielle Authier and local punk musician Claire Giordano. Weird story with this one: they were staying at the White House Bed & Breakfast in Skagway and were already thinking about what sort of thing they wanted to do for the auction for Patience. That night, Danielle had a dream about a young woman in white standing at the end of her bed. Danielle was in bed but couldn’t move. The apparition pointed towards where Claire was sleeping, nodded, then disapparated. When they woke in the morning, Claire found clasped in her hands some small old bones and a piece of cloth. She had NO idea where they came from. In her dreams, she had seen the image of these two people. The two decided to combine their skills and dreams and made these puppets using the images Claire had seen, the bones, and cloth. They think the figures are totemic and blessed. You be the judge.

-The driftwood Christmas tree was made by local artist Tamar Harrison with her company Tidal Drift. Her work is based on the integration of natural materials sculpted by the elements combined with treasures such as antique beads, gemstones, fossil ivory, and driftwood.

The Laughing Raven coffee is roasted by Sean Layton. America’s biggest coffee snobs are not in Seattle but in Alaska, who have spent years perfecting the right brew in the most caffeinated place in the country. The Raven is the symbol of the local Tlingit clan in Skagway. The Raven’s Tlingit name is Yéil and symbolizes intelligence and wisdom. There are 4 bags of coffee in the basket: Ethiopia Sidamo, Columbian Excelso, Sumatra Ketiara, and Brazil Porta Rossa.

-The train painting is by Roel van den Hoom. He was born and raised in the Netherlands, where he attended the Academy of Fine Art in Nunspeet. He moved to Canada in 1995 where he fell in love with its diverse natural beauty. This art print is a high-quality reproduction from an original watercolor, using chlorine and acid-free paper. Each print contains a minimum of 20% post-consumer fibre.

-The Puffin Painting is by artist Forest Hembree. Born in 1960, the son of “Alaska Bush” teachers, he grew up in a small town called Hoonah. Growing up with a deep interest with the creatures in the woods, on the shores, and in the waters, he early on expressed an interest in artistically representing them. As an adult professional artist, he uses smaller brushes and finer shading in his paintings. He tries to include the look and feel of the animal’s immediate environment to emphasize their symbiotic nature.

-Beau Dennis (or by his Lingit name, NEECHXWUDUYÁA), is an aspiring NW Coast formline artist focusing on acrylic painting on vellum and canvas. Born in Juneau, Alaska in 1981 and raised in Skagway, he has shared ancestry from the Tlingit, Haida, and Scottish peoples. Having always had a fascination with the art of his Alaskan heritage, he has designed this t-shirt (and stickers) in that style.

-Pepita Borracha Hot Sauce is a fiery combination of chili de arbols, toasted pumpkin, sesame seeds and a blend of aromatic spices with apple cider vinegar and a healthy dash of tequila, produced in Skagway by Texas expatriate Kellie Curtin. Pepita is hand-crafted in small batches with attention to detail that harkens back to the way things were made “in the old days”. The T-shirts are designed by local Austin photographer Clif Wright of White Mule Design.

Brittle, factory designation HS8795-73, is a former Caregiver robot scavenging the wastes of the two-hundred-mile-long Sea of Rust in former Michigan and Ohio. It’s a world where the last human died 15 years ago, and vast AIs known as OWI, or One World Intelligences, now connect millions of the robots who have forcibly inherited the Earth. Brittle is an outlaw, making her way as best she can by her code, refusing to give up her individuality to an OWI. But when Brittle’s own parts begin to break down under threat from another wasteland scavenger, Mercer, she must make an alliance she suspects is foolhardly. But it’s the only chance she has for survival. Guiding other bots across the Sea of Rust she knows so well under constant dangers—including not just insane robots, but the larger conflict between two OWIs—Brittle relives memories of the time before, the humans she knew, and the death of humanity as she fights to live to see another sunset. With Sea of Rust, acclaimed author, screenwriter, and film critic C. Robert Cargill has created an unforgettable post-apocalyptic “robot western.” Calling it “visceral, relentless, breathtaking,” New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill says Sea of Rust is “a forty-megaton cruise missile of a novel–it’ll blow you away and lay waste to your heart.”

This is edition is one of 52 ever printed leatherbound editions, signed by author C. Robert Cargill.
