Tigers Are Not Afraid Movie Review

TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID MOVIE REVIEW

If Guillermo del Toro directed City of God, it would probably look a lot like Tigers Are Not Afraid. Directed by Issa Lopez, the story primarily follows Estrella (Paolo Lara), a young girl whose mother goes missing after a cartel shootout happens at her school. While in class, the teacher gives her three pieces of chalk, saying they have wishes that Estrella can use. What follows is a magical realism journey as Estrella seeks to survive on the streets with a group of orphans led by El Shine (Juan Ramon Lopez) as they evade gangsters looking for an incriminating video on a phone Shine stole. Justin, Bradly, and London had heard the hype this movie had been receiving, especially from Guillermo del Toro himself, so they immediately requested a screener once it became available. Is this truly as good as they say? Or is it a victim of del Toro’s hyperbolic praise? Find out in the review!
