Well, the second trailer for the much awaited World War II epic by Christopher Nolan has been released. The first trailer did not offer much of story and the same goes for this one as well. Although, what we are treated to is more characterization and understanding of the situation.
The evacuation of Dunkirk is a landmark battle in World War II. In 1940, the allied forces lost a series of defensive battles and were in retreat towards the French port of Dunkirk. Unfortunately, the German air-force then instituted a bombing raid on the retreating ground troops and navy. While the battle is technically a loss for the Allied forces, the cooperation of the military and civilians enabled this event to be one of the most inspirational ones of the war.
This second trailer really conveys the intense sense of dread emanating from the characters. The soldiers having to lie down on the ground to try to safeguard against the air raid. The medical boats are thought to be safe, but are bombarded as well. Even the royal air force is being blown out of the sky.
The tight shots really bring an intimate feeling which draws the audience into the thick of battle. The dramatic dialogue, which is normally criticized in Nolan’s films, really fits the tone. Nolan has also done his trademark of collecting excellent actors from Kenneth Branagh to Tom Hardy. The final aspect that benefits the trailer is the lack of score, the silence adds to the realism of the battle.
Dunkirk will arrive in theaters July 21, 2017.
