War for the Planet of the Apes is the third film in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise. Rise of the Planet of the Apes came out in 2011 and was met with critical and financial success. The sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, was met with even greater acclaim. The series as a whole has been complimented by critics and audiences alike for its storytelling, world-building and motion-capture performances.
In War, Caesar is still leading the apes, who are now embroiled in a deadly conflict with human military forces led by a very serious looking Woody Harrelson. As Harrelson’s character suggests, it appears that the apes and humans will be fighting for dominance of the planet.
What is interesting is that there are apes and humans that appear to be fighting on both sides, leading to some potentially intriguing story dynamics. The action looks just as good as the first two films, as does the motion capture performances by Andy Serkis and the rest of the ape actors.
War for the Planet of the Apes will be in theaters July 11, 2017.
