Acclaimed video game developer Naughty Dog revealed some trailers at the most recent PSX conference in San Francisco, and hot damn did they drop some doozies.
They revealed a sizable teaser for The Last of Us: Part II, the long-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed 2013 title. The trailer sees Joel and Ellie in dire spirits, although what other condition could we expect after the harrowing events of the first game?
Everything that made the first installment great is present in this trailer: the stunning graphics and atmosphere, the emotional performances of the characters and the general sense of dread. The Last of Us was a phenomenal looking game when it came out (and is still better looking than most PS4 games) and this looks like it’s raising the bar even higher.
Here we see that some time has passed since we last saw Joel (Troy Baker) and Ellie (Ashley Johnson). She’s clearly aged a few years and is now a young adult. Her brittle, scarred hands pluck away at a guitar, singing “Through the Valley” by Shawn James. There’s been a vicious battle, seeing as bodies are strewn throughout the house and Ellie is covered in blood. She finishes out the song as Joel arrives, asking her if she really wants to go through with “this.” Ellie responds that she will kill every last one of them (them most likely being the Fireflies). It’s an ominous note to start on, suggesting that this game will further complicate the moral dilemmas established in the first installment.
At the earliest, we might see the game in 2018, but this is one that I’m fully okay waiting patiently for. Naughty Dog, take your time and deliver us another mind-blowing adventure.
