‘Logan’ Trailer

After the success of Deadpool, many wondered what the long-lasting effects the film would have on 20th Century Fox. Deadpool was as much a reaction to super-hero fatigue as it was a stand-alone, quality film.

Fox’s new attempt at R-rated superhero fanfare is the new Wolverine film, Logan. It’s reportedly Hugh Jackman’s last outing as the iconic character. We now have the first trailer, and the footage looks as bold as the title.

The new film appears to ignore all of continuity, but that decision looks to play in the movie’s favor. Much like the comics, these new X-Men films seem to be content at being one-offs and stand-alone stories.

This time around, we follow Logan through an apocalyptic future where mutants are all but extinct. We get brief glimpses of Caliban (Stephen Merchant) and Professor X (Patrick Stewart) seems to get in on the action, but for the most part, this is a future where mutants have been pushed to the edges of the world.

The trailer is a great showcase for director James Mangold (The Wolverine), who appears to be taking full advantage of his creative freedom here. This looks very reminiscent of classic westerns and even apocalyptic sci-fi like Mad Max. It’s bold and different, which is exactly what the X-Men franchise needs right now.

Logan comes to theaters March 3, 2017.
