The fest is over, the post-fest-flu is losing its hold, and it’s time to gather together our critics into one room to talk about the rest of the films at the fest and list our top three. Chris is joined by Richard, Jenny, JC, and Harris to give one last round of discussion about the best festival in the world, Fantastic Fest…
ANOMALISA
Writer/Director Charlie Kaufman tells with very unique (and kind of creepily real) stop motion animated puppets this story of dissatisfaction, ennui, and infidelity.
ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM
A 7 foot tall yellow octopus alien is going to destroy Earth, but he’ll allow it one last chance: let him teach an assassination class and if one of his students can kill him, Earth will be spared.
BONE TOMAHAWK
Kurt Russell is the sheriff of a small town and when a woman from there is kidnapped by a cannibalistic tribe, he rides out with Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins and Matthew Fox to try to save her.
THE BOY AND THE BEAST
Mamoru Hosoda created this animated film about a 9 year old boy who becomes apprentice to a beast warrior.
THE DEVIL’S CANDY
The director of “The Loved Ones” finally returns with this nasty bit of horror. Ethan Embry plays a totally metal dad with his totally metal teen daughter who have to deal with a house that whispers satanic sweet nothings and its former child-killing occupant.
GREEN ROOM
A touring by the seat of their pants punk band (led by Anton Yelchin) take a backwoods gig at a bar that is largely populated by nazi skinheads. When they accidentally witness a murder, they find themselves trapped in the club’s green room, as the skin’s leader (believe it or not, Patrick Stewart) tries to figure out how to get them out.
LIZA THE FOX FAIRY
In 1970s Budapest, Liza can’t seem to keep a man; they all die. She suspects she might be a fox fairy, a mythological creature doomed with this curse, but in truth, she’s haunted (more like stalked) by a love-struck dead Japanese pop singer who wants her to himself.
LOVE AND PEACE
Madman Shion Sono returns with another unexpected slice of bat-shit crazy with his latest film. Not that it’s easy to sum up but: a nerd with dreams of being a rock star has his wishes granted by his pet turtle that he accidentally flushed into the sewer and is turning into a kaiju. Oh, and also, Santa Claus.
SOUTHBOUND
This horror anthology dovetails all its stories together in the deep south (so deep, we’re never really sure where and neither is anyone else in the film).
TOO LATE
John Hawkes is a private eye looking in LA for a missing stripper and perhaps redemption for his troubled past. Shot in five takes, “Too Late” is one of the most talked about films of the festival.
EVOLUTION
A teen boy lives on an island where the women can’t get pregnant and the men are artificially impregnated.
LAZER TEAM
Rooster Teeth’s first feature film is about a warlike alien race that challenges Earth to combat, but unfortunately only four morons with space armor can help. NOTE: features Korey Coleman in a cameo.
THE BRAND NEW TESTAMENT
God is a jerk and he lives in a closed-off tenement in Brussels with his mousy silent wife and young daughter. When his daughter has had enough of his callous treatment of the world, she sets out to change everything for good.
HARD TO GET
This South African film follows a guy who finds himself with multiple tough guys/mobsters chasing him as he can’t help himself but want to be with the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen.
