Trailer Reaction: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Directed by Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead, Watchmen), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice follows Gotham City’s Batman (Ben Affleck) as he travels to Metropolis to stop the powerful and controversial superhero, Superman (Henry Cavill), believing him to be threat to the entire human race. As the two iconic titans battle one another, a new threat emerges amid the chaos. Dawn of Justice co-stars Jessie Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Jeremy Irons.

Though I can’t say I was the biggest fan of Man of Steel, it’s hard for me not to admit that the trailer for Dawn of Justice is very impressive, both in terms of the action it wonderfully showcases and the various characters that appear in it. Additionally, it’s nice seeing that much of the destruction in Man of Steel is finally being addressed, with Superman answering for his actions. Though I’m very concerned that some of his family and friends seem to be telling him he has nothing to apologize for, I’m hopeful that Clark at least admits that he could have handled the situation more…elegantly.

Though much of the focus is obviously on Superman and Batman, there are a handful of clips that show Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor and Gadot’s Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Rocking the wig and channeling a darker version Gene Hackman’s performance in the original Richard Donner Superman, Eisenberg’s take on Lex appears to be very eccentric and oddly charming. However, little is revealed about Gadot’s performance as the famous Amazonian warrior, other than the fact that she has some hand in the action between the Man of Tomorrow and the Caped Crusader.

Personally, I think the standout character in the trailer is Affleck’s Batman. Seeing that he was at ground zero when Superman and General Zod were busy destroying Metropolis, it’s quite easy to believe why he’s so adamant that Superman is an enemy that must be stopped. Longtime Batman aficionados will get a kick out some of the obvious hints to the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery, including The Joker, who not only seems to be a fan of sending Bruce heartwarming love letters, but also dead Robins like Jason Todd.

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice will make its way to theatres March 25, 2016.
