Highly Suspect Reviews: Self/Less

What would you do if you were old, powerful, rich and could take your consciousness out of your frail and dying frame and put it into that of young man’s body? I think it’s a no-brainer that’d be a big seller. Such is the premise of Tarsem Singh’s latest film where Ben Kingsley gets his mind transferred into Ryan Reynolds body…supposedly a vat-grown, never was human thingee. But of course, that would make for a boring movie. Chris, Richard and Elliot don’t agree at all on this one so listen up.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, in 1992 Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas, where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free, by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal”, turned into a full time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this paradise you see before you.

I think Richard is on a crusade to be the site’s contrarian extraordinaire. Every site should have one I guess. Makes for definitely a more fun review when there are extreme opposite opinions. Though trying to say this movie is better than The Matrix is definitely blasphemy. As vapid as the Wachowskis can be, they are much smarter filmmakers than Tarsem Singe has ever been.

    • He is basically a Scottish Cargill/Carlyle

      • Ryan Naughton

Not really, Cargill was always more infectious in my book.

It’s the beard, we’re really easily confused. Although I’m not Scottish.

Haha! Well you do have an impressive beard Mr. Whittaker 🙂

Elliot was trying so hard to mediate Richard and Chris’ back and forth but got sucked in because I feel that Richard was almost being unreasonable. Great review guys, but Richard needs to stop trying to pick fights with everyone just for the sake of it.
