Directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 is the final chapter in the blockbuster franchise. Though never intending to start a continent-spanning revolution, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), the girl who dared to oppose the Capital and its dictator, President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland), has every intention to bring the civil war to a final and violent end. In addition to Lawrence and Sutherland, the film also co-stars Woody Harrelson, Josh Hutcherson, Phillip Seymor Hoffman and Mahershala Ali.
Watch the first official trailer for Mockingjay Part 2 below and see if it looks like the satisfying finale that everyone is clamoring for.
First off, I think its best that the trailer is focusing on the action. As viewers of Mockingjay Part 1 remember, the film suffered from its meandering pace and eye-rolling love-triangle between Katniss, Peeta (Hutcherson) and Gale (Liam “Wooden” Hemsworth). I’m hopeful that this trailer isn’t lying about the action it seems to be promising. With exploding jeeps, impassioned speeches and giant waves of black goo chasing our heroes, things appear to be actually happening in this movie.
One of the most welcoming sights in the new trailer is Gwendoline Christie, who is apparently making it her mission in life to appear in every major television and film franchise coming out over the next several years. Best known for her role as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, and soon to be loved by Star Wars fans everywhere as the villainous Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Christie stars as Commander Lyme, one of Katniss’ fellow rebel leaders. Though this will be character’s first introduction in the film series, Lyme is described in the books as a battle hardened soldier and former victor/survivor of the Hunger Games. She and her home district, District 2, will supposedly play an important role in the film.
In the end, I’m looking forward to Mockingjay Part 2. Lawrence has continued to prove that she is one of the finest actors of her generation and the film’s supporting cast features some of the best talent working today. If the movie manages to capture the same wonder and excitement that Catching Fire did, then I would be very satisfied.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 will be released in theatres November 20, 2015.
