It looks like Daredevil is going to be having quite the exciting second season, especially with the confirmation that Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Wolf of Wall Street) will be appearing in the series as Marvel’s deadliest vigilante, The Punisher. Announced via Marvel.com, the Punisher will be busy trying to clean up New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary in Daredevil, and will ensure that no criminal escapes his brand of justice.
Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb (Batman: The Long Halloween), has released a statement expressing his excitement for Bernthal’s casting and the role in which The Punisher will play in Daredevil.
“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Frank Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
In addition to Loeb’s quote, Marvel has released the logo for Daredevil Season 2. By the look of the bullet holes, it seems that Murdock and Castle won’t be getting along when they first meet.
I don’t think it’s even necessary for me to express my excitement for Bernthal’s casting as The Punisher. Bernthal is one of the hardest working character actors today, having appeared in some of the most critically-acclaimed movies of the last few years, including The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury and The Ghost Writer. His role as Shane on The Walking Dead remains one of the series’ best performances, and showed how he could portray a man with severe psychological issues. If he can bring the same level of frightening intensity that he brings to every other role with The Punisher, then we are in for the scariest take on Marvel’s emotionally-damaged anti-hero.
Daredevil Season 2 will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2016.
