Trailer Reaction: Marvel’s Daredevil Trailer #2

Netflix has released a second trailer for Marvel’s Daredevil, revealing more of Matt Murdock’s past, the crime wave sweeping across New York City and the rise of the criminal leader known as the Kingpin. Violent, grim and suitably gritty, the trailer only continues to build excitement for the highly anticipated series.

With the first teaser heavily focusing on Murdock (Charlie Cox) and his vigilante alter-ego, it’s nice to finally see some footage of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in action, and boy does this trailer deliver on what we can expect to see from New York’s most powerful crime lord. Nothing says “intimidating” more than providing a calm monologue while beating some poor bastard to death. D’Onfrio’s take on Wilson Fisk seems to match the comic book character’s personality, with Fisk being both reserved and impassioned. As showrunner Steven S. DeKnight has explained in past interviews, Netlix’s Daredevil will be as much about Hell’s Kitchen resident crime-fighter as it will be about the Kingpin. Both characters have a different take on cleaning up Hell’s Kitchen, and as the rampant violence and bloodshed in the trailer suggests, Murdock and Fisk will do everything in their power to stop one another.

“When I was a kid, I’d dream what it would be like. To live far away from Hell’s Kitchen. But I realized this city was a part of me. It was in my blood. That I would do anything to make it a better place.”

In addition to revealing more of Daredevil’s titular villain, it was nice to finally hear a reference to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, reminding us that a certain hammer-wielding demi-god and an alcoholic-billionaire in an iron-suit are flying around.

I’m hopeful that Daredevil will be Marvel’s first real success at an ongoing television/online series. Though Agent Carter and Agents of SHIELD have certainly attracted an audience of devoted followers, neither has been able to match DC’s Arrow or The Flash in terms of quality.

Daredevil will premiere on Netflix April 10, 2015.
