Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation Trailer Reaction

Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation (yes, that colon is in the right place), the fifth cinematic installment in the popular action franchise, has just released its first official full-length trailer. This time, Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and the rest of his IMF compatriots are battling the nefarious Syndicate, an organization that is billed as the “anti-IMF.” With a summer filled with superheroes, genetically-engineered dinosaurs and post-apocalyptic survivors, can an action film like Rogue Nation even compete?

Watch Cruise and his shirtless torso prove that it can below:

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher), Rogue Nation seems adamant about showcasing its assortment of impressive set-pieces, most notably the ones that feature Hunt dangling off the sides of planes. Though 52-years-old, Cruise still manages to sell the bombastic stunts he’s so fond of doing through a combination of his character’s charm and obvious insanity.

Series newcomers and returning faces include Alec Baldwin (who is obviously not the villain), Rebecca Fergusson, Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. Though the trailer gives each supporting IMF team member a few seconds of screentime, it’s Pegg’s Benji Dunn who receives the lion share of the attention. While heavily featured in 2012’s Ghost Protocol, Benji looks to be even more involved in the film’s plot and biggest action sequences.

As a fan of the last two Mission Impossible films, Rogue Nation looks to be doing everything right. By continuing to focus on the ensemble cast and placing greater emphasis on the ridiculous stunts, the series has continued to set itself apart from other spy-thriller franchises. As long as there aren’t any random shots of doves, everything should be okay.

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation will hit theatres July 31, 2015.
