Dwayne Johnson and DC are cooking something up

Of all the people being potentially cast as comic book characters with towering physiques, why didn’t this one come sooner?

Well, we don’t know which character he’ll be just yet. But thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we know for now that professional wrestler/actor superstar, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is apparently in talks with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment to be involved in one of their upcoming projects. This was revealed through a tweet that Johnson had put out on New Year’s Eve:

We just had a big meeting w/ Warner Bros CEO re: @DCComics 2014 we will partner up and create the cool bad assert. #RockTalk @ActionTilson

— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) December 31, 2013

Johnson is no stranger to being attached to DC projects, as his name was in contention for the role of Black Adam in a Captain Marvel movie and as the titular anti-hero in a film about Lobo. As a side note, Johnson’s mention of 2014 has been taken as a date for when this project will come to fruition, but it could very well be leftover festivity for New Year’s Eve.

The way it looks at this point in time, this announcement could go anywhere. The safe guess for now would be that Johnson is joining the already massive cast of Batman vs Superman as a key character, whether it’d be the long-rumored Martian Manhunter or even the recently suggested John Stewart/Green Lantern, a character rumored in some circles to be played by Denzel Washington. Or, if his inclusion of 2014 in his tweet is indeed the time that this project will materialize, then it might be something much smaller in scale. I doubt the latter possibility strongly, as DC is no Marvel Studios in getting their projects off the ground with uncanny speed. Either way, whatever The Rock is cooking with DC is smelling mighty appetizing so far.

      1. I haven’t seen much of his acting to judge, but I think The Rock’s physicality would be wasted on someone like Luthor. I’d love someone meek like Joaquin Phoenix to take the role while Johnson uses his stature for one of DC’s more imposing characters.

        1. Totally agree about his physicality being wasted in playing Luthor. I think he might have the charisma to pull if off though.

My pick would still be Martian Manhunter.

          1. The modern Lex Luthor physique is imposing at least in the comics and the cartoon D/C universe. Brains and Brawn make for badass villian.

            1. OR Darksied would be cool too if you want to go intergalactic. I just want an there to be a epic villain so that I can watch an epic fight.

            2. That’s true, but then that’ll mean hiding The Rock’s physique with a power-suit that anybody could wear, thus rendering his large stature superfluous to his casting. That’s why I’d rather have someone like Phoenix — he already has undeniable acting chops AND would have a reason to wear the suit due to his average appearance. That said, I’m not against The Rock being Luthor, as it would be an unconventional choice… but I would still question why DC didn’t use his physique for a character that would fit it.

        2. I would rather see Dwayne Johnson to be Lex Luthor and be an imposing DC villain. Because he can pull off being a megalomaniac that can match both powerful personalites that is Superman and Batman. Dwayne as Lex would physically menacing at the same time adding tension and make it believable Lex could go a round of fistacuffs with just SUPERMAN in a powered combat suit. Without a good villain in movies like this will fall flat because there is no tension and at worse be boring.

  1. Well seeing as how he will be playing Hercules in the Hercules: The Thracian Wars film, he could be cast as the DC comics Hercules character seeing as how Wonder Women will be introduced in the Batman vs Superman film. Doubtful but who knows.
