It’s time for yet another numerical list – and yes, it has to do with Batman vs. Superman. Am I original or what?
It’s been only about a week since the official announcement of Gal Gadot playing Wonder Woman in the Man of Steel sequel (or, as I see it from all the news so far, DC: The Movie), and yet the casting machine for the film is still running at full speed. The latest bit of news to come out, as reported on OOU by the incomparable Chris Harrison, is that Jason Momoa, former cast member of Game of Thrones and star of the most recent incarnation of Conan the Barbarian, is in talks with Warner Bros. to have a role in the hotly anticipated 2015 blockbuster. As with most of the details surrounding the production, his character and role in the story is being kept under wraps, which has of course sent the Internet aflutter with speculation as to which DC Comics character he could play that would fit his towering physique.
I assume most geeks would see this sort of guessing game as the most fun to get out of while looking forward to a comic book movie, and I’m no exception. So it is my pleasure to give my take on which five characters from the DC roster could be played by Momoa, and how they would be integrated with the sparse details given for the film so far. Plus, it’s nice to dust off my DC knowledge every now and then!
So let’s get to it:
A villainous android, Amazo has the ability to hone the powers of the superhumans he comes in contact with, making him a formidable foe to any hero unfortunate enough to cross his path. A frequent troublemaker for the Justice League, it would make sense if he were to appear in a movie that already has Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and possibly the Flash, and any fight with him would make for a great action set-piece. Plus, it would be an efficient shortcut for him to be a haywire creation of Lex Luthor, who’s been rumored to appear since the start of the film’s production.
Forever known as the villain who briefly killed Superman, Doomsday is a genetically-engineered being from outer space that’s a nearly unstoppable force of nature whenever he’s unleashed. His origin story was quite generic, but it has been revised several times. This would allow the film to present him as the random killing machine who lands on Earth from his first appearance, a Kryptonian weapon released from imprisonment, or he could go the route of Amazo and be manufactured by Luthor as an answer to Superman’s destructive recklessness. One of the two rumored names thrown around in the official reports of Momoa’s negotiations, I can definitely see why people would pick him, as Doomsday’s incalculable strength would also make him a worthy adversary for the Justice League..
3. Martian Manhunter
The second name being tossed about in the reports, Martian Manhunter is one of the core members of the Justice League, as well as one of the more recognizable second-tier DC heroes thanks to the multiple animated series he has appeared in for the past decade or so. Having him turn up in the film with most of his teammates would be one more step for Warner Bros. to finalize a Justice League film, however sudden his, Wonder Woman and the Flash’s appearances might be. As an added bonus for Momoa, he can finally don the green makeup he was supposed to have as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Arguably one of DC’s greatest villains, Darkseid has long been rumored to be the central villain of a Justice League movie, mirroring the first storyline of the New 52 run of comics in which the team goes to battle with the alien overlord of Apokolips. If this is the route that Warner Bros. chooses, then Momoa’s appearance would have to be a cameo, very much like Thanos at the end of The Avengers. Since Darkseid is DC’s Thanos anyway, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to tease him this way.
And now, for my final pick, I decided to go off the page of plausibility and pick a character that Momoa would be perfect for, yet who has a snowball’s chance in Hell of appearing in this movie. Just a little fun, that’s all. Brace yourselves for this tidal wave of realization…
The Main Man himself! C’mon. Look at him. Look at him. Look at this character and tell me that someone of Momoa’s physical attributes can’t flawlessly portray this character with the help of some makeup and costume garb. The scraggly hair, the facial structure, the muscles, the imposing stature – it’s all there, baby. And Warner Bros. doesn’t even know it. Again, I know there’s no way that this will happen, but I just had to point that out.
…LOOK AT HIM!!
Anyway, those are my guesses, take them as you will. But more importantly, what say you, dear readers? Do you have your own suggestions of what DC character Momoa could play? Do you agree with any of these picks? Sound off in the comments below!
