♫ It’s A whole new looook! A realistic face, for you, to see! Some-one, has, got, to know! What I have, to show! And know that you’re not dreaming… ♫
I hope that sounded better in your head, than it did in mine…
An interesting composite has been circulating the web recently, involving the work of graphic designer Karen Graw. With this project, her goal was to take the Disney characters, remove their caricature characteristics, and portray them in the most realistic way possible. This is what she told the folks at Yahoo:
“What would Disney characters look like if I saw their ID photos — just like any other person in line for groceries?”
She also touched on the influences and material she worked with to compose these faces:
By using reference images of noses, eyes, and other facial features of celebrities, friends, and strangers, Graw used photo manipulation software programs to create composites of characters from classic animated movies. “I wanted it to be as close as possible to some real person on the street,”
Yikes. I wonder who inspired her work for Quasimodo… probably a combination of Psy (the genius behind Gangnam Style), and Lindsay Lohan.
Here are some of her portraits, as well as their animated counterparts:
The thing that really impresses me, is how she was able to avoid venturing in to the uncanny valley, well, except for Ursula and Maleficent (Although, they do remind me of a couple of people I’ve seen at the bus stations around Seattle, so I guess it’s still pretty damn accurate). They all look really normal and real for the most part, which I think is quite the accomplishment. It’s like someone watched a Disney cartoon, while under the influence of a reverse engineered LSD. Instead of seeing things as super psychedelic and trippy, things just get way too real…
